| August is Child Safety Awareness Month, and it also marks the return to school for children across Florida. That means now is the perfect time to come together and reinforce the importance of school zone and school bus safety both inside our offices and throughout our communities. Raising Internal Awareness: No matter what office you officially call ‘home,’ we all can play a role in supporting safety Print and display the attached poster in your office, cubicle, or near your workstation. A quick visual reminder can encourage focused driving and help build a culture of safety! Help us highlight back to school safety messages in meetings and presentations by using the attached Safety Moment slides. Download and share additional resources from our partners: Click here to access FLHSMV Child Safety Awareness Month resources. School Bus Safety resources can be found on the FLHSMV website as well as provided by the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition. In the Community: Grass-roots outreach efforts greatly improve safety messaging effectiveness – these one-on-one conversations have far-reaching impacts As students head back to school, the need for school crossing guards increases. These are integral roles within our communities. If you know someone who may be interested, please encourage them to learn more here: Become a School Crossing Guard. Not only are these paid, often benefit-eligible positions, you get to support students and school safety in our communities. If you see school zones that are not operating safely, people not slowing down in school zones, or children crossing roadways when or where they should not be doing so, please share that information with the Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) coordinator in your District. The CTSTs are comprised of safety professionals in engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency services working together to improve safety. The CTSTs can bring forth the resources needed to improve safety in the school zones in your community! In Your Everyday Life: Even when you’re not ‘on-the-clock,’ there are ways to improve safety culture in Florida Meet the Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS) Superheroes Safety Squad! Check out these Guardians of Roadway Safety and learn more about their interactive, safety-centered stories. This content is a fun and educational way to get kids learning about traffic safety! Remind friends and family to slow down in school zones and watch students and parents walking or biking. We all play a role in the safety of our students, so showing patience and appreciation to our school crossing guards can go a long way! Show appreciation to school crossing guards with a smile and a wave. Have an idea or success story to share? We’d love to hear how you are promoting Target Zero in your role! This initiative grows stronger when we inspire one another, so let us know what’s working in your office, team, or community. Thank you for everything you do to help save lives. Together, we’re building a safer Florida, one school zone, one conversation, and one action at a time. Savannah & the Target Zero Team |
