Tips Tuesday: National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month
July 23, 2025
| 7-17-25 Each year, thousands of roadway fatalities are caused by unsafe driving behaviors near large trucks and buses. Operation Safe Driver Week, held annually in July and led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), is a national enforcement and awareness campaign focused on addressing dangerous driving behaviors among both passenger and commercial vehicle drivers. Roadways in Florida serve as vital freight corridors that support our economy, meaning we share the road with commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) every day. Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or heading out on a summer road trip, knowing how to drive safely around large trucks and buses is essential to prevent serious injuries and fatalities. This year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, taking place July 13–19, 2025, focuses on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving. Regardless of the vehicle you drive, safe driving practices help protect everyone on the road. The Florida Highway Patrol and regional partners support this campaign and work year-round to reduce commercial vehicle crashes. During the week, law enforcement will actively conduct traffic enforcement and outreach to promote safe driving practices. Raising Internal Awareness: No matter what office you officially call ‘home,’ we all can play a role in supporting safety Show your support for safe driving by using the custom Operation Safe Driver Week Teams background attached to this email. When you hop in the driver’s seat, don’t forget to “buckle up”! 😊 Also attached are educational postcards from CVSA, available in both English and Spanish. Feel free to print and share them with your team to help spread awareness. Explore CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week resources and key messages. These materials are great for sharing in meetings, breakrooms, or on office bulletin boards to help educate coworkers and the community. CVSA has also created public service announcement (PSA) videos in support of this observance. Sharing these videos is a great way to promote safe driving across your networks. In the Community: Grass-roots outreach efforts greatly improve safety messaging effectiveness – these one-on-one conversations have far-reaching impacts Follow FDOT and local law enforcement on social media for timely safety messages during Operation Safe Driver Week. Share their digital content to amplify their messages online within virtual communities. While enforcement is a key focus during Operation Safe Driver Week, outreach and education efforts make a lasting difference. In your communities, share messages about: The dangers of aggressive driving and speeding. The importance of leaving plenty of space when driving near large trucks. Checking blind spots and avoiding distracted driving. In Your Everyday Life: Even when you’re not ‘on-the-clock,’ there are ways to improve safety culture in Florida Be truck aware: Trucks have large blind spots, need more space to stop, and make wide turns. Never cut in front of a truck and always give them plenty of room. Click here for nine tips for driving safely around large trucks and buses. Resources for Teen and New Drivers are available here. Model safe behavior for others, especially young drivers in your life, by obeying the speed limit, buckling up, and avoiding aggressive maneuvers around CMVs. If you know someone who drives a commercial vehicle, thank them. Professional drivers play an essential role in Florida’s transportation system and help keep our communities running. Together, we can support Florida’s professional drivers and encourage all motorists to travel safely. So, remember to embrace the space, find your chill, and enjoy the journey. Let’s get everyone home safely! Savannah & the Target Zero Team |
