100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers
June 12, 2025
5-21-25 Memorial Day Weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. According to AAA, Orlando, Florida, is the #1 domestic travel destination for Memorial Day Weekend, followed closely by Miami at #5. (Source [newsroom.aaa.com]). And, the Tampa Bay Metropolitan Area is projected to see a 64% increase in traffic congestion compared to typical patterns (Source [newsroom.aaa.com]). With these changes, we anticipate an influx of visitors and unfamiliar drivers. This reinforces the importance of doing our part to sharing the road responsibly! Raising Internal Awareness: No matter what office you officially call ‘home,’ we all can play a role in supporting safety Before hitting the road, make it a habit to do a safety belt check. Ensure all passengers are properly secured with lap belts across the hips and shoulder belts across the chest. According to FLHSMV [flhsmv.gov], that click reduces the risk of being injured or killed in a crash by almost 50%. Start the conversation: Use the Teams Background (linked below) to highlight safe driving practices. What’s wrong with the picture? Remind everyone to “buckle up” every time they get in the “car”! 😊 In the Community: Grass-roots outreach efforts greatly improve safety messaging effectiveness – these one-on-one conversations have far-reaching impacts – Talk with neighbors, friends, and family about roadway safety features that help improve safety, such as reduced speed zones and speed limits. Remind others that speed limits serve an important purpose by reducing the probability and severity of crashes. A speed limit sign notifies drivers of the maximum speed that is considered acceptably safe for favorable weather and visibility. It is intended to establish the standard in which normally cautious drivers can react safely to driving problems encountered on the roadway. (Source [fdot.gov]). In Your Everyday Life: Even when you’re not ‘on-the-clock,’ there are ways to improve safety culture in Florida – During Memorial Day weekend, remember to stay alert and remain focused while behind the wheel. Expect increased traffic if you live near one of Florida’s beach communities or tourist destinations. Create a plan and adjust your departure times accordingly to avoid stressful delays. – Use travel time to discuss roadway safety with the family! Try using the BINGO card (linked below) for a fun, interactive learning experience during the next carpool or road trip. Every effort to promote safe behaviors and highlight safe systems helps protect the people we care about most. When we work together to prioritize safety, we are more than just drivers on the roadways, we’re a community cultivating a culture of safety. Thank you for all your continued efforts!
