Halloween – Recipes for the Road
September 29, 2025
| Every day, parents and caregivers make choices to keep their children safe on the road. One of the most important is using the right car seat or booster seat. Since 1975, child restraints have saved the lives of more than 11,600 children under the age of 5. Yet, research shows that while most families believe they’ve installed car seats correctly, nearly half (46%) are installed improperly, putting children at risk (NHTSA). Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21–27) and National Seat Check Saturday (September 27) are so important because they remind us that proper installation and use of child restraints can save countless lives. By spreading awareness and encouraging safety checks, we can all play a part in protecting our youngest passengers. Raising Internal Awareness: No matter what office you officially call ‘home,’ we all can play a role in supporting safety Please help spread awareness by creating your own “Seat Fitting Station Locator” flyer! Download the attached Word template. Use the map at flchildseatsafety.com to find your location. Update the flyer with the location details and add a screenshot from the map. Print and share your customized flyer! Share the attached NHTSA educational resources with colleagues to help families choose the right seat based on a child’s age, weight, and height. Additional resources are available on the official NHTSA webpage. Use the attached desk drop cards to kindly remind your colleagues about National Seat Check Saturday! A quick conversation or card drop can inspire someone to take action. In the Community: Grass-roots outreach efforts greatly improve safety messaging effectiveness – these one-on-one conversations have far-reaching impacts Visit the FLHSMV website to learn more about Florida’s child passenger safety and restraint requirements. Help raise awareness about the importance of proper child seat safety with your own family, friends, and neighbors! Encourage parents and caregivers to visit FDOT’s Florida Occupant Protection Resource Center to learn more on how to keep children safe in vehicles. Click here to view their Florida Child Passenger Safety Seat Fitting Stations by County. These stations are staffed with nationally certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technicians who teach families how to use child safety seats, booster seats, and seat belts correctly. In Your Everyday Life: Even when you’re not ‘on-the-clock,’ there are ways to improve safety culture in Florida Explore NHTSA’s detailed videos in both English and Spanish on choosing the right car seat and installing it properly. Start here: Car Seat Safety – Choosing The Right Seat. Everyday Tips for Parents and Caregivers: Always use the right seat. Make sure your child is in the appropriate car seat, booster seat, or seat belt based on their age, height, and weight. Check installation every time. Even if you think it’s installed correctly, double-check the straps, recline angle, and latch system before each trip. Be a role model! Always wear your seat belt so they see safety as non-negotiable. Regularly check for recalls. Visit NHTSA’s recall database to make sure your child’s seat has not been recalled. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to safety. Together, we can protect our youngest passengers and help ensure every trip on Florida’s roads is a safe one! Savannah & the Target Zero Team |
